Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
