The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Feedback

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer vision.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our audience.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following several months of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.

His leadership and background in the competitive gaming space is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Experience of the New Head

Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? The game has not yet received an official release date or platforms, but players can anticipate more updates as creation advances.
