Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
