As Sunbathers Fled Attack, Viral Picture Shows Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard loud noises ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the hill soaked, she heard someone approaching at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved at something that certainly every part of you would signal you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and paramedics attending to many the injured.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the attack becoming a temporary hospital. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance entering the ocean to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the tragedy, statements of support circulated widely. One post conveyed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The team of rescuers published a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive messages and support. We are touched by the kindness for our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it supports those involved.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting began until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a council representative.

“The team show selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores protected for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
